Turkey Joins EU (well, in 20 years)

Indeed, already from next year on, the EU will begin accession talks with Turkey. I think this is great. Many people in Europe will grumble, and complain about the islamisation of Europe. and this is a worthy fear: everyone needs to know they have a safe home, and a unique and own identity, so there might be some trouble.

But people must also recognize 2 things.
The EU's population is not growing steadily enough to sustain in over the long term and that cricis of financial turmoil and unstability is worse than any imbalance of populations.
Also, it is crucial in fact to show that the EU is truly an open society, open to anyone who fits the 'values', whatever these may be, and however laughable they may seem.

So it's gonna take a lot of years, and I'm only enthusiastic about this PROVIDED it takes at least a decade... i haven't been there but i'm sure Turkey still has a lot of work on its hands.

firstly, the army there is still a bit dodgy, in that there are still elements in it which want a good and heavy hand in the control of power.
the radical islamist element is not a threat firstly because Turkey is secular, but also because if you promise a Muslim nation the prospect of such openness and basically, propserity, fundamentalism can only thrive as a niche market for the few case of "rejection".
But very important for any country to move on I think is for it to recognize it's past mistakes, and for Turkey, one of these is the Armenian Genocide, and other repressive acts it committed back then, against other minorities such as the Assyrians for example.

Once it does this, litterally cleanses itself, i think it's a step closer still.
